On expensive touch-sensitive smartphones, scratches are a serious thing.  To prevent permanent screen damage due to scratches, there are a number of protective measures that can be employed.

Screen Protector

Using a screen protector or screen shield is the best way to protect your screen. There are numerous screen protectors on the market, some more durable than others. There are four main types of screen protectors: privacy, matte, ultra-clear and mirror. Each type has its own benefits, but all are quite effective in guarding against scratches. When first applying a screen protector, be sure it is applied correctly, or ask a cellphone professional to demonstrate. A screen protector can be removed for simple replacement.

Phone Case or Pouch

When purchasing a mobile device, a phone case or pouch should be part of the purchase. Leather phone cases are available to protect the phone from scratches. These cases can be easily attached to a belt or to the arms where it can be accessed with ease. Leather may be the most expensive type of case, but there are many other choices including cloth, plastic and rubber.

Phone Safety

Resist the urge to keep your phone in a pocket. Other items in a pocket, such as keys and coins, have sharp edges that can damage the phone’s screen. For storing your phone in a bag, select a pocket that is solely used for the phone; that way, it will not be accidentally mixed in with damaging materials. Many travel bags and handbags have pockets especially designed to hold a mobile device.

Replacing Screen Protectors

Regardless of how durable a screen protector is, all will eventually wear out. If one starts to peel off or show folds at the edges, it needs to be replaced. If it is not replaced, the sticky part will start collecting dust particles, and these will inevitably cause scratches to appear on the phone’s screen. It is highly beneficial to only use screen protectors before they start showing wear and tear.

Placing Phones Face Down

Regardless of the surface, always place a phone facing up. Placing phones face down will eventually damage the screen. Even with an extremely durable screen protector, there may be sharp objects or particles that can tear the protector and scratch the screen.

Smartphones are expensive, so why not invest in a durable screen protector. This will protect your phone and increase its longevity.
